What is Climate Change?

Climate change is long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. This may be naturally occurring (i.e. variations in the solar cycle) but human activities have been the main driver of climate change since 1800s, primarily due to burning fossil fuels including coal, oil and gas. Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas emissions that trap the sun’s heat and raise temperatures. Greenhouse gases causing climate change include carbon dioxide (emitted from petrol cars, heating systems, destruction of forests) and methane (created by rubbish landfill and cattle). Energy, industry, transport, buildings and agriculture are all major contributors to climate change. The consequences of climate change include flood, drought, fires, water scarcity, rising sea levels, melting polar ice, severe storms and declining biodiversity.
